Print Sermons and Sermon Notes

Created by Abigail Hill

Encoding Cotton Mather’s Election Sermon is a transcription and TEI encoding of two versions of a sermon given by Cotton Mather in May 1690: an auditor’s note and a published version.  The encoding prioritizes script choices made in the handwritten version, typographical choices made in the print version, Biblical references in both, and the connections between the two documents.  Comparing the initial auditor’s note against the published version reveals insights into the relationship between speaking, listening, reading, and writing in a broader culture of orality in the late 17C United States.  Hill does not have permission from the repositories that hold the original documents to share her transcription or images at this time.
